CSUN to Host Week of Eating Disorder Awareness

Cal State Northridge's program to promote awareness of eating disorders, JADE, will hold its second annual "Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention Week" February 3-7 at the university.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 5 million Americans, including more than 5% of all college students, suffer from disorders like bulimia and anorexia. The JADE event is designed to educate the public about eating disorders and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of unhealthy attitudes toward body image.

Presentations will include videos, guest lecturers, and CSUN students relating their own experiences. The Feb. 5 sessions will be dedicated to friends and family of those struggling to overcome a negative self-image. Information about support and referrals for treatment will also be available.

A giant board will stand in the University Student Union where people can attach public letters of concern to their loved ones who have an eating disorder. The week will end with "Fearless Friday", a day to "let go of your fear of fat -- give up on dieting and talking about food" said JADE organizer Ellen Mayer.

JADE is organizing the event in conjunction with University Counseling Services, the Student Health Center, Associated Students, The Office of Residential Life, and Intercollegiate Athletics Dept.

All sessions are free. For information and a complete schedule of events, please call Ellen Mayer at (818) 677-2366.
