Former Surgeon General Koop to Attend Professor's Book Signing

Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop will join Cal State Northridge professor emeritus Robert C. Horn at the university Friday, February 7, for a signing of Horn's book "How Will They Know If I'm Dead?"

Horn, an authority on the Soviet Union and U.S. foreign policy in the Third World, was forced to retire from the university five years ago because of Lou Gehrig's disease. "How Will They Know If I'm Dead?" chronicles how Horn and his family coped, and continue to cope, with his disability and terminal illness.

"Robert Horn has done more real living than most of us ever do," Koop wrote in the preface for the book.

The book signing and a reception for Horn will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union located near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Horn was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 1988. The disease has left him paralyzed, unable to eat, talk or breath without assistance. He has been able to write with a special computer hooked up to his right foot.

For more information or to RSVP for the book signing, call the university's Political Science Department at (818) 677-3488.
