Photos Depict Los Angeles' Black History

The Center for Photojournalism and Visual Arts at California State University, Northridge will host an exhibition by African-American photographer Harry Adams, Jr., at the California Afro-American Museum beginning March 22.

Nearly 100 photographs will be displayed from more than 300,000 negatives from Adams' collection. Such notables as civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley are among the images captured by Adams.

Adams collected images from all aspects of African-American life in Los Angeles. Cultural, social and religious organizations are represented in his collection.

"Adams' photographs constitute a significant contribution to the history of the African-American community in L.A.," said Kent Kirkton, a CSUN photojournalism professor and coordinator of the exhibit.

The exhibition will run from March 22 - May 25. Many photographs presented formally will also be available for hands on viewing.

For more information about the Adams Exhibition, call Kent Kirkton at (818) 677-3301.
