Community Invited to Run, Walk or Roll
For CSUN's Center for the Physically Disabled

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 20, 2004) -- The public is invited to join hundreds of faculty, students and other members of the community as they Run, Walk or Roll on Saturday, May 1, to raise money for Cal State Northridge's Center of Achievement for the Physically Disabled.

The third annual "Run, Walk & Roll" 5K and 10K, presented by the 99 Cents Only Stores, will begin at 8 a.m. in front of the center at the corner of Lindley Avenue and Plummer Streets near the center of the university.

The flat, fast course will lead participants, some in wheelchairs, all over the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge. In addition to the 5K and 10K walk, run and wheelchair race, there also will be a "Fun Run" for children under the age of 12.

The race start times are 8 a.m. for the wheelchair roll, 8:03 a.m. for the walk and run and 9:45 a.m. for the "Fun Run." The awards ceremony will take place at 9:45 a.m.

The race is organized by Friends of the Center for Achievement and Sponsors (FOCUS), a group of volunteers from CSUN's Center of Achievement for the Physically Disabled. Proceeds from the "Run, Walk & Roll" support the center.

Since 1971, CSUN's Center of Achievement for the Physically Disabled has provided long-term, low-cost therapeutic exercise programs for thousands of people dealing with disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries. With the recent addition of the Abbott and Linda Brown Western Center for Adaptive Aquatic Therapy, the Center for Achievement has expanded programs and services to clients who are unable to benefit from exercise in land-based programs, including children and the severely disabled.

In addition to providing therapeutic services to the community, the Center for Achievement for the Physically Disabled also serves as a training facility for CSUN students pursuing degrees in fields such as kinesiology and adapted physical education.
