CSUN Hosts High School Student Research Poster Symposium

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 16, 2004) -- Aspiring young scientists from Los Angeles area high schools will congregate at Cal State Northridge next month to present their research in the "K-12 Student Research Poster Symposium.Ó

The exhibit will take place on Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the university's Grand Salon in the University Student Union located on the east side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The symposium will feature posters detailing the research of nearly 100 science students in grades ranging from kindergarten through twelfth. The students also will be available to answer questions about their research.

"The nation's health, welfare and security depend on producing top research scientists,Ó said Steven Oppenheimer, CSUN biology professor and co-director of the symposium. "This program starts these youngsters early on the road to careers in research science.Ó

In addition to having their work displayed during the symposium, many of the students will have an opportunity to publish their work in the Journal of Student Research Abstracts.

"This symposium is a crown jewelÉ in training teachers to train their students on how to do high quality publishable and presentable research,Ó Oppenheimer said.

CSUN's College of Science and Mathematics is home to several nationally recognized programs where students gain valuable experience through hands-on work using the latest technologies and equipment. Students also have an opportunity to co-author publications with faculty members, present their research results at national and international meetings, and prepare for teaching careers.
