Business Leaders to Talk About
Career Advantages of a Philosophy Education
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 27, 2004) -- Leaders from a variety of professions will talk on Thursday, May 6, at Cal State Northridge about how they found that an education grounded in philosophy helped them to achieve success in their chosen fields.
The panel discussion, "Philosophy Outside of Academia: How to Succeed in Your Chosen Career with an Education in Philosophy," will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Special Events Room on the second floor of the Sierra Center on the west side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge. The event is free and open to the public.
The panelists will explore the value and versatility of an education in philosophy. They will talk about how the cultivation of analytical, critical and interpretive skills that comes with the study of philosophy prepares one for success.
"Philosophy has helped advance my career in every step," said Stephanie Mangano, vice president for casting administration for Walt Disney Pictures and Television and one of the evening's panelists. "If you are logical, you can outperform the majority of people in the work force."
Beau Vrolyk, a partner with the investment firm Warburg Pincus Management and another panelist, agreed.
"Philosophy teaches clear and critical thinking," he said. "In every aspect of business, clarity of thought is highly valued. Success accrues to those who think clearly and act decisively."
Other panelists include Don Lehman, president of CoMark Advertising Agency; Leemon McHenry, legal researcher for George Murgatroyd III of the law firm Baum, Hedlund, Aristei, Gulford and Schiavo; and Terry Rozelle, a professional skeptic for the Center of Inquiry.
The evening will be moderated by Gregory Velazco y Trianosky, chair of CSUN's Department of Philosophy. A question and answer period will follow the discussion.
