CSUN's Society of Professional Journalists
Hosts First Amendment Freedom Forum
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 6, 2004) -- The public is invited to join Cal State Northridge's student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) in a forum on challenges to the First Amendment.
The "Kenneth S. Devol First Amendment Freedom Forum" is slated for Wednesday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Thousand Oaks Room of the universityŐs student union, located on the west side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
Experts from the local media will join CSUN faculty in a panel discussion about issues that threaten the five aspects of the First Amendment: freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and freedom to petition the government.
"Our goal is to make people aware of the challenges and threats to the First Amendment currently being faced within our society," said Heather Warren, SPJ president. "Too often, we take our civil liberties for granted and donŐt realize how important these rights are in our daily lives."
Following the panel discussion, there will be a showing of "The Trial of John Peter Zenger." Directed by Paul Nickell, this film recounts a historic battle waged between an American colonist and British libel laws when Zenger printed unfavorable material against EnglandŐs King George.
Refreshments will be provided. Event parking is $4 in Lot G4, off of Zelzah Avenue. For more information, please contact Heather Warren, SPJ president and event coordinator at (818) 677-2915.
