CSUN'S Spring Cinematheque Series Explores
Arts, Media, Communication in Film

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 23, 2004) - Cal State Northridge's Cinematheque series this spring will explore how the arts, media and communication are depicted or reflected in film.

Northridge's Cinematheque this academic year has been devoted to examining how Hollywood treats the seven artistic cultures - cinema and television arts, communication studies, journalism, music, theatre and radio - that make up the College of Arts, Media, and Communication, where the series is housed.

February's offerings include screenings of A Sunday in the Country, an homage to the Department of Art, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11; Platinum Blonde, an homage to the Department of Journalism at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25; and Bombshell, an homage to the Department of Cinema and Television Arts, at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

The free screenings take place in the Alan and Elaine Armer Theater in CSUN's Manzanita Hall, located at the southwest corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Other February screenings include:

  • Jean Cocteau's 1946 version of Beauty and the Beast on Monday, Feb. 9, which will be preceded with a lecture by Ed Landler.

  • A sneak preview of Against the Ropes will take place at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12.

  • The premier of Fathers and Sons will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, followed by a discussion with guest Jared Rappaport.

  • The documentary, Lon Chaney: The Man of a Thousand Faces, will show at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, followed by a discussion with guest Michael Blake, who helped create the film.

  • Ed Landler will also be the guest lecturer for a showing of The Kid at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23.

  • An examination of television and the blacklist will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with the showing of four You Are There episodes - "The Death of Socrates," "The Tragic Hour of Dr. Semmelweis," "The Tragedy of John Milton" and "The Torment of Beethoven."
