'Calendar Girls' Focus of CSUN Women and Aging Presentation
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 14, 2004) -- Mary Valentine, who has spent the past five years with the Calendar Girls, will be the featured speaker at a program about the issues of women and aging to be held Thursday, April 22, at Cal State Northridge.
Valentine's presentation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Nobbs Auditorium on the first floor of Sequoia Hall, located near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
The Calendar Girls are a group of 11 women, all members of the Women's Institute in England, who gained international fame by posing nude for a calendar that raised more than $1 million for leukemia research. Their story was made into a movie, Calendar Girls, starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.
Valentine received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology from CSUN, where she has taught in the women's studies, sociology and speech communications departments.
She will talk about her research of the past ten years, which has focused on the Women's Institute, England's oldest and largest women's organization, and her work with the Calendar Girls, who are between the ages of 45 and 67. She will share insights on what the Women's Institute and its Calendar Girls can tell us about issues of women and aging that transcend their organization.
The program, sponsored by Sigma Phi Omega, CSUN's chapter of the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology, is open to the public and free of charge. Parking is available for $4 in lot G4 on Zelzah Avenue north of Nordhoff Street.
