Release of the Research Journal
Launches Careers of Aspiring Scientists

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., June 1, 2004) Ð Hundreds of young aspiring scientists throughout the Los Angeles area have started along their career paths with the release of a Cal State Northridge cosponsored journal.

The ninth volume of the Journal of Student Research Abstracts: An Annual Journal for Young Investigators and Their Teachers, features the research of more than 700 science students in grades ranging from kindergarten through twelfth.

The journal abstracts, co-authored by students who come from schools in economically depressed areas that serve mostly underrepresented students, range from the ambitious, such as an "Analysis of Heavy Metals in and Around the Los Angeles Harbor" to the practical, "Which Type of Insulating Material Keeps a House the Coolest?"

"This journal is a crown jewel that documents the success of our program in training teachers to train their students in how to do high quality publishable and presentable research," said Steven Oppenheimer, Northridge biology professor and editor-in-chief of the journal.

The journal is a groundbreaking opportunity for the young researchers to get their work into print, said Oppenheimer "This program starts the youngsters early on the road to careers in research science."

Preceding the release of the journal, approximately 100 of the journal's co-authors gathered at CSUN on May 8, to present their work in poster format at the "Student Research Poster Symposium." "The nation's health, welfare and security depend on producing top research scientists," Oppenheimer said.

CSUN's College of Science and Mathematics is home to several nationally recognized programs where students gain valuable experience through hands-on work using the latest technologies and equipment. Students also have an opportunity to co-author publications with faculty members, present their research results at national and international meetings, and prepare for teaching careers.
