CSUN Forum to Explore Race and Power in America

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 4, 2003) - Author and activist Tim Wise will explore the issues of race and power in America during a forum on affirmative action at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, March 18.

The forum, "What About Affirmative Action, Reverse Discrimination and Scapegoating: Race, Power and Politics in American Culture," will take place from 12:25 to 1:50 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the west side of the campus off Zelzah Avenue.

"The goal of the forum is for attendees to have increased awareness of how issues of race and power are tied to current events," said Carolyn Okazaki, the forum's coordinator and a counselor with CSUN's University Counseling Services.

"We hope people will turn out to hear Tim's unique perspective and to join us in attempting to understand the difficult and complex issues of race and power in American culture," she said.

Wise has emerged as a prominent white anti-racist voice in the United States. A social justice activist for the past two decades, he has spoken on more than 275 college campuses and to hundreds of community groups. He has trained labor, government, corporate and law enforcement officials on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions.

He is author of Little White Lies: The Truth About Affirmative Action and Reverse Discrimination and a collection of essays, Speaking Treason Fluently: Anti-Racist Reflections From an Angry White Male, expected to be released this year. His writings also have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines throughout the world.

For more information about the forum, call University Counseling Services at (818) 677-2366 or (818) 677-7834 (TDD). Sign language interpreters will be present for the forum.
