Volunteers to Learn How to Help Kids Read

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 24, 2003) - Can you read this? Congratulations. Unfortunately, too many of the children in Los Angeles can't.

Cal State Northridge is hosting free literacy training on Sunday, Feb. 9, for people interested in helping children learn to read.

After receiving training, volunteers will be given the opportunity to go into a Los Angeles area school and read with a child for one hour, once a week.

"With so many children in Los Angeles area schools struggling to learn to read, people working one-on-one can really make a difference. When you teach someone to read, you open up whole new worlds of opportunity," said Lynn Gordon, a CSUN elementary education professor who is helping to coordinate the training session.

The training session will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 1214 in the Education Building at Cal State Northridge, located on the west side of campus off Etiwanda Avenue just south of Plummer Street. Parking is free and available in Parking Lots B5 and B6 off Plummer.

The training for the workshop is being provided by Koreh L.A., the Los Angeles Jewish Coalition for Literacy.

For more information about the training session or to RSVP, call (323) 761-8153 or e-mail literacy@jewishLA.org.
