Elementary, Middle, High School Students
To Present Science Research at CSUN Symposium
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 2, 2003) - About 100 Los Angeles area elementary, middle and high school students will present the results of their research projects in poster form at a special symposium on Saturday, May 17, at Cal State Northridge.
The "Student Research Poster Symposium" will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union on the east side of the campus off Zelzah Street in Northridge.
Most of the students taking part in the symposium are in classes led by teachers trained to do research in special programs under the direction of CSUN biology professor Steven Oppenheimer and funded by the National Science Foundation, the Eisenhower Improving Teacher Quality Project and the California Science Project.
"The nation's security, health and welfare are dependent on producing outstanding scientists who are creative and innovative," Oppenheimer said. "Our programs provide creative research experiences for the youngest of students, starting many of them on the road to careers in creative research science. The success of our programs is documented by the students' publications and poster presentations."

CSUN's College of Science and Mathematics is home to several nationally recognized programs where students gain valuable experience through hands-on work using the latest technologies and equipment. Students also have an opportunity to co-author publications with faculty members, present their research results at national and international meetings, and prepare for teaching careers.
