CSUN Panel to Debate Morality

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 12, 2003) - As issues are tossed about the political spectrum -- war, abortion and treating AIDS to name a few -- many claim the moral high ground. But others claim that morality is relative.

A panel of Cal State Northridge faculty will discuss moral relativity and the role morality plays in our lives during a special presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Presentation Room of the Oviatt Library in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

"Moral relativism is basically the view that morality for a group or perhaps an individual is relative, pertaining to issues in that group as opposed to being absolute and universal," said philosophy professor James Kellenberger, one of the organizers of the event. "The debate about moral relativism has been around for centuries."

Taking part in the panel discussion, sponsored by CSUN's Center for Ethics and Values, will be religious studies professor Patrick Nichelson, anthropology professor Christina von Mayrhauser, and philosophy professor Douglas Portmore.

The Center for Ethics and Values is home to a group scholars and San Fernando Valley community leaders from the San Fernando Valley who share a common desire to examine in an open forum some of the ethical and value problems that affect society today. The center supports research into ethical and social policy issues; the dissemination of that research in publications, academic colloquia, and public conferences; and serves as a consulting body to individuals and organizations requesting information or advice on ethical decisions and social policy.
