(NORTHRIDGE Calif., April 15, 2003) The National Institute of Health estimates that about 1.8 million Latinos in the United States have diabetes and many donšt know what it is nor how to treat it.
Cal State Northridgešs Associated Students has teamed up with the American Diabetes Associationšs San Fernando Valley chapter to ensure that the local Latino community has the facts to combat the disease.
The third annual "Latino Diabetes Education Seminar" will take place on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Student Union in the Grand Salon, in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
The seminar will feature a keynote address by Nasser Mikhail, an endocrinology professor from UCLAšs School of Medicine.
Among the topics to be discussed, many in Spanish, is the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes among Latinos, the risk to the children of diabetics and gaining control of blood pressure and cholesterol.
