Japanese Ritual and Tradition Expressed at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE Calif., March 11, 2002) The public is invited to explore Japanese musical traditions at a special Taiko drum performance on Saturday, March 23, at Cal State Northridge.

Satori Daiko, the performing ensemble of the Taiko Center of Los Angeles, uses drums with a combination of martial-arts based movements that have their roots in Japanese ritual and tradition.

Their performance is at 8 p.m. in CSUNšs Performing Arts Center on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

"The sound of thundering drums touches you, body and soul. You feel at one with the sound. It awakens a primitive bonding experience, perhaps because of the awareness that humans from time immemorial have used drums to communicate," said Carolyn Okazaki, director of CSUNšs Project Advocates for Cultural Talk.

"It may also have more to do with the fact that the sound of the drums is reminiscent of the bonding that takes place in the womb with a fetus and the sound of his/her motheršs heartbeat. Whatever it is connected to, the sound of drums is powerful," Okazaki said.

The concert also will feature several traditional Japanese music guest artists including Matsuyama (koto), and Kokko Sakashita (shigin singer). Also in the program are tap dancers Miki Dun and Denise Donavan of the University of California, Riverside Tap Dance Ensemble, who will be tap dancing to the taiko rhythms.

The San Fernando Valley Buddhist Temple also will participate by performing bon ordori folk dances.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors. For tickets, call the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office at (818) 677-2488.
