CSUN Exhibit to Focus on African American Artists

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan 11, 2002) - "Mother Weep No More," an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and contemporary quilts, opens later this month in Cal State Northridge's Performing Arts Center Gallery.

The exhibit will be on view Jan. 31 to June 1 in the gallery located in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center on the east side of the campus off Zelzah Avenue.

There will be an artists reception on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. Focusing on work by African American artists, the exhibit features ceramic sculptures by Sean Beard and recent quilts by the African American Quilt Guild of Los Angeles.

Beard's sculptures attempt to capture the spirit of liberation, from slavery to freedom, of African American ancestors. His works on display are done in remembrance of Alex Pilkington's poem "Mother Weep No More."

Similarly, the quilts reflect aspects of African American history, from the underground railroad to contemporary freedom marches.

Also on view will be paintings by Jeanette Brewer, which depict quilting groups and plantation life.

The Performing Arts Center Galley is open one hour prior to performances. For hours, call (818) 677-3943. The gallery will be closed April 1 and May 27 for university holidays.
