Vagina Monologues Performances to Benefit
Valley Trauma Center, Afghan Women

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 31, 2002) - Cal State Northridge is hosting three performances of Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues, in February to benefit the Valley Trauma Center and organizations helping women and girls in Afghanistan.

The performances on Feb. 14, 15 and 16 are part of the annual V-Day College Initiative/Campaign, an international grassroots public education effort to end violence against women.

The show is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. each night in the university's Performing Arts Center on the west side of the campus off Zelzah Avenue. An opening night benefit reception following the Feb. 14 performance will feature entertainment and a fine art exhibit and sale.

Tickets are $50, with discounted $25 tickets available for students and seniors. Tickets are available through the Performing Arts Center's box office at (818) 677-2488.

Proceeds from the three shows will go to organizations helping women and girls in Afghanistan and the Valley Trauma Center, a sexual assault crisis center affiliated with CSUN's Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling.

The Valley Trauma Center serves the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys by providing assistance to survivors of sexual assault and their families, participating in the Valley's Sexual Assault Response Team with law enforcement and medical professionals, and conducting violence education at area schools and community and service organizations.

The center maintains a 24-hour hotline staffed by volunteer certified rape crisis advocates who provide confidential information and crisis counseling over the telephone. The advocates also meet survivors at hospitals, police stations and courts to provide free on-site emotional support and information.

For more information about the Valley Trauma Center, call (818) 756-5330. The center's 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Hotlines for the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys (818) 886-0453 or (661) 253-0258. Calls to the hotlines are confidential.

California State University, Northridge has more than 31,000 full- and part-time students and offers 59 bachelor's and 41 master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and the third largest in the 23-campus CSU system. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges recently said CSUN "stands as a model to other public urban institutions of higher education."
