CSUN Celebrates Students Artwork in a Special Exhibit
(NORTHRIDGE Calif., April 30, 2002) - About 80 works of art by Cal State Northridge students will be on display this month as part of the university¹s "Annual Juried Art Student Show."
The show opens May 3 and continues through May 31 in the Main Gallery on the north side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
An opening reception for the show will take place at 7 p.m. on May 3. The evening also will feature a signing by CSUN art professor Betty Ann Brown for her new book, Gradiva¹s Mirror: Reflections of Women, Surrealism and Art History on the opening day at 7 p.m. in the Main Gallery.
Gradiva¹s Mirror is a work of creative nonfiction that weaves autobiographical reflections into historical analyses of paintings, sculptures, photographs and texts created by 11 women associated with Surrealism.
"I am really excited that the book has finally taken physical form because it has been not only a project but a dream of mine for years. The women artists featured in the book are inspirational to me and I know they will be an inspirational to students as well," Brown said.
The student exhibit includes a variety of artworks in all media from ceramics to printing, computer design to industrial and painting to sculpture that will be on display.
The work on display was selected by a team of art professionals including Aaron Atchison, owner and director of Farm Design, a graphic design studio in Santa Monica; Darrel Couturier, owner and director of Couturier gallery, and Marta Sinclair, a Los Angeles painter who has several one-person exhibitions as well as numerous group shows.
"The breadth of media and styles taught in our art department are well represented by the [art professionals¹] selection," said Louise Lewis, director of the Art Gallery and a CSUN professor. "The quality of the works in the exhibition is a source of pride for our department, and reflects the dedication and skills of our teaching staff."
The Main Gallery is open Monday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
