CSUN Celebrates Earth Week
by Encouraging Environmental Awareness

(NORTHRIDGE Calif., April 10, 2002) - Cal State Northridge will celebrate, "Recycle for Earth Week 2002" with a variety of events designed to draw attention to recycling, waste reduction and environmental awareness beginning Saturday, April 15.

"What weıre hoping to do is to educate our campus community in ways they can help improve the environment so they can get involved with environmental issues," said Cyndi Signett, coordinator for CSUNıs Student Recycling Services and coordinator for the weeklong events.

The series will begin on Monday, April 15, with "Clean Out Your Files," a program that originated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to promote recycling in offices. The campus community is urged to recycle old records, files and documents by putting them in blue recycling bins, which are normally limited to white office paper.

The annual Earth Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Student Union, on the east side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Representatives of environmental organizations, campus groups and public agencies will be on hand to provide information about caring for the environment. "INCA, the Peruvian Ensemble" will be performing at noon.

April 18 through April 20, the city of Los Angelesı HazMobile Collection Program will be collecting household hazardous waste. On April 20, people will also be able to recycle old computers and cell phones. The collection program will set up in Parking Lot G-10 at Lindley Avenue and Lassen Street.

The university will host an "Activism Fair" on Thursday, April 18, in the University Student Union. Participants will learn how they can make a difference through political activism.

City officials will actually get a jump on the weekıs activities by having a "Backyard Compost Bin Sale" and a free "Smart Gardening" class at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, in the universityıs Lot G-10 at the corner of Lindley Avenue and Lassen Street.
