Few Weeks Left for Free Tax Help from CSUN Students

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 20, 2001) - There are only a few weeks left for low-income families and individuals to take advantage of the free tax preparation assistance being offered by Cal State Northridge business students.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/Low Income Tax Clinic (VITA/LITC) program, offered through the university's College of Business Administration and Economics, is available through April 6 at 14 centers throughout the San Fernando Valley and greater Los Angeles area.

More than 250 CSUN students have gone through an intensive training program to prepare them to deal with most of the basic problems taxpayers confront. They are working alongside VITA/LITC supervisors who have taken a more advanced course that includes an update on new tax laws. In addition, IRS agents are serving as advisors at some VITA/LITC centers.

The free tax preparation assistance is available to people who cannot afford professional help. Due to the large demand for help, eligibility is limited to those with a gross annual income of not more than $40,000.

Specialized services are provided for senior citizens and non-English speaking individuals and individuals with disabilities.

For a specific list of tax forms prepared, more information about the program or the location of VITA/LITC centers, call (818) 677-4519.
