CSUN Celebrates Earth Week by Encouraging Recycling
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 9, 2001) - Cal State Northridge students, faculty and staff will celebrate Earth Week 2001 with a series of events that encourage people to recycle.
"Recycle for Earth Week 2001" begins April 16 and features days filled with activities including an environmental fair, concert and tree planting.
"What we're hoping to do is educate our campus community in ways they can help to improve the environment so they can go out and get involved with environmental issues," said Cyndi Signett, coordinator of CSUN's Associated Students Recycling Program.
The celebration begins Monday, April 16, with "Clean Out Your Files," a program that originated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to promote recycling in offices. During the two weeks of this event, all types of paper can be recycled in bins usually set aside on the campus for white paper only.
Wednesday, April 18, the university's annual Earth Fair will take place form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Student Union. Representatives of environmental organizations, campus groups and public agencies will be on hand with information about preserving the environment. The Reggae-Ska band "The Specials" will perform at noon.
Tuesday, April 24, volunteers will join CSUN's Biology Department in the planting of trees around Science Buildings I and II from 8:30 a.m. to noon off Lindley Avenue near the center of campus.
Other Earth Week activities include a visit by the city of Los Angeles' HazMobile to collect household hazardous waste April 19-21 in Parking Lot T at Lindley Avenue and Lassen Street, and the sale of composting bins on Saturday, April 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Parking Lot C at Zelzah Avenue and Prairie Street.
