Banquet Honors CSUN Alumni While
Providing Scholarships to Current Students
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 2, 2001) - Cal State Northridge's La Raza Alumni Association will host the seventh annual La Raza Scholarship Banquet Saturday, March 10, at the university.
CSUN Chicano/a Studies professor and award-winning author Rodolfo Acuna will be the guest speaker at the banquet honoring three outstanding CSUN alumni - Everto Ruiz (class of 1969), Lorraine Chaparro (class of 1973) and Maria Chairez (class of 1975).
Ruiz, currently a Chicano studies professor at CSUN, will be honored for his work as a scholar and as founder of Mariachi Aztlan, a student group that encourages interest in Mariachi music.
Chaparro, now the chair of the psychology department at Oxnard Community College, will be honored for her involvement in counseling people in the community.
Chairez heads the Secondary Success Program of the Clark County School in Las Vegas and will be recognized at the banquet for her volunteerism and work in education.
A tax deductible donation of $50 will benefit La Raza Alumni Association's scholarship program.
The association in the past has raised more than $10,000 to help CSUN students with their educational expenses.
The banquet will be held from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the Grand Salon in the University Student Union near the center of campus.
Parking will be available in Lot C at Zelzah Avenue and Plummer Street.
