Date-Rape Survivor Katie Koestner To Speak at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 27, 2001) - Katie Koestner, outspoken date-rape survivor and sexual assault prevention advocate, will be at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, April 3, to talk about her experience with date rape.

Koestner, who appeared on the cover of TIME magazine 1991, has received national attention for speaking out against date rape-a crime of silence. She has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, MTV and other programs.

A Virginia-State trained and certified peer educator and sexual assault counselor, Koestner went public .

She graduated in 1994 with degrees in Public Policy and Womenıs Studies from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Since graduating, Koestner has presented her program "No/Yes" to students at more than 800 colleges, high schools, and military institutions in 47 states and internationally.

She founded Students Helping Other to Understand Trauma (SHOUT) at Cornell University, and the Sexual Assault Companions Program at the College of William and Mary.

According to Koestner, her goal is to reach as many students with her message as possible, while still young enough for them to relate to her as a peer.

Koestner will speak at 12:30 p.m. in the University Student Union on the eastside of campus.
