Arizona Schools Superintendent to Speak at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 30, 2001) - Lisa Graham Keegan, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Arizona, will speak about how public school testing is faring in her state on Monday, May 7, at Cal State Northridge.

Keegan, who is serving her second term in office, will talk about "Why States Test Public School Students" at 2 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union. Her presentation is free and open to the public.

"Arizona is about one year ahead of us in terms of testing, so we're hoping she's going to enlighten us as to what happens next," said Stan Metzenberg, a CSUN biology professor and one of the organizers of her visit. "We (California) gave a high school exit exam for the first time this year. Arizona did it last year, and had a certain amount of public fallout as a result. It should be really interesting to hear what she has to say. We hope to learn from Arizona's experience."

As Arizona's Superintendent of Instruction, Keegan oversees an annual budget of $4.5 billion for the public education of students in kindergarten through 12th grade. She also serves on the state boards for universities and colleges and charter schools and is a board member of the Educational Leaders Council.

Keegan has gained national attention for her efforts in educational reform, including student-centered funding, charter schools, school choice and an emphasis on marketplace incentives. She developed her policies while a member of Arizona's House of Representatives, where she chaired the education committee.
