CSUN Conference Explores the Meaning of Being Jewish
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 19, 2001) - The Jewish Studies Program at Cal State Northridge will present its first conference examining research on Jewish identity and its implication for Los Angeles.
The "Journey Toward Jewish Identity" conference, co-sponsored by The Jewish Federation-Valley Alliance, will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in the University Student Union on the eastside of the campus
"I think itšs important that the university reach beyond the college classrooms into the community and that the community speaks to the university and raises concerns that can be explored by researchers," said Jody Myers, conference coordinator and CSUN history and religious studies professor.
Bethamie Horowitz, author of Connections and Journeys, a study about Jewish identity and the meaning that being Jewish has in peoplešs lives, will deliver the keynote address.
Also taking part will be Bruce Phillips of the Hebrew Union College, who will discuss the specific demographics of the five-valley region and the Los Angeles Jewish community.
Conference participants also can attend workshops on such topics as how some research findings affect Jewish identity and family dynamics, youth and young adult programming, the formal education setting, and contemporary synagogues and religious leadership.
