CSUN Forum Examines Prejudice, Discrimination, Hate
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 27, 2001) - A forum at Cal State Northridge explores the determinants and ramifications of prejudice and discrimination, and the importance of learning to live and work together in an increasingly diverse society.
"The Hate Within," a forum on prejudice, discrimination and hate, will be held Thursday, March 29, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on campus.
"While humans appear to have a propensity and predisposition to carry prejudiced attitudes, we are not helpless in the face of our genetic make-up, socialization or current cultural norms. We do have choices," said Carolyn Okazaki, event coordinator and a counselor at CSUNšs University Counseling Services.
The forum will be moderated by Gregory Velazco y Trianosky, associate dean of CSUNšs College of Humanities. Panel discussions will cover physiological, psychological, sociological and anthropological determinants of prejudice and discrimination, as well as the financial and religious aspects of hate and prejudice.
According to Okazaki, "Studies indicate that it takes a critical mass, perhaps 10-12 percent, to make a change in any group.
"We hope people will turn out and join us in attempting to understand the difficult and complex issues of prejudice and discrimination. Together we can come up with solutions and make changes for the better," she said.
