CSUN Celebrates Black History Month with Series of Events
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 1, 2001) - Students, faculty and staff at Cal State Northridge kicked off the university's celebration of Black History Month today with opening ceremonies and a convocation.
The celebration continues throughout February with concerts, a march, plays and discussions examining the role of African Americans in society and on campus.
CSUN Black History Month activities include a jazz concert by the Brad Mehldau Trio at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Performing Arts Center; a march beginning at noon Feb. 7 in the University Student Union to demonstrate campus unity; and a student summit on the role of African Americans on campus and in the community at noon Feb. 10 at the Black House, 18348 Halsted St.
On Feb. 12, there will be a rally and discussion on the issue of reparations to the descendants of slaves. The rally is scheduled for noon on the Oviatt Library steps and the discussion will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Fernandino Room of the Satellite Student Union.
Other activities include the opening of the play "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" Feb. 16, in the university's Little Theater; a discussion of African Americans and the radio led by CSUN professor Johnie Scott from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on Feb. 19; and a hip hop/rap talent show from 4 to 11 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the student union on Feb. 26.
On Feb. 27, the Pan African Studies Department and the Black Student Union will present a performance of Douglass Turner Ward's play "Day of Absence" at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. A town hall meeting examining the issues raised by the performance will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 28 in the Presentation Room of the Oviatt Library.
