Library Exhibit Examines Los Angeles in the Nuclear Age

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 30, 2001) - It was the time of "duck and cover." When Americans had bomb shelters in their backyards and people were preparing for the possibility of an atomic bomb falling from the sky.

You can catch a glimpse of what life was like in Los Angeles during the Cold War at a new exhibit at Cal State Northridge's Oviatt Library, "Atomic City: Southern California in the Nuclear Age," running from Feb. 5 through Feb. 28. The library is located in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

"Atomic City" includes more than 100 photographs and other memorabilia that examine the region's relationship with nuclear technology.

"As someone who grew up in that era, the photographs really strike a cord," said Cindy Ventuleth, director of development for the library. "The exhibit is curated by Physicians for Social Responsibility so that we can learn from that time in history."

In addition to the exhibit, the library also will screen two films that typify the atomic era. "Dr Strangelove," starring Peter Sellers and George C. Scott, will be shown at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the library's Presentation Room. "Fail Safe," starring Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau, will be shown at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Presentation Room.

James Warf, professor emeritus from the University of Southern California and former chemist with the Manhattan Project, will talk about his experiences while working on the atom bomb at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
