A special seminar at Cal State Northridge, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 24, will address the prejudices and challenges developmentally disabled adults face while raising children and managing their home and finances.
The seminar is sponsored by CSUN's Family Focus Resource Center in collaboration with the North Los Angeles County Regional Center. It will be held in the Family Focus Resource Center in the Education Building, Room 3118, located at Etiwanda Avenue and Vincennes Street.
Seminar participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn through hands-on exercises about disciplining and insuring the health and safety of children of different ages. In addition, information will be available on support services, including community resources, helplines, parenting classes and transportation, for adults with developmental disabilities who are expecting or have children.
While the challenges for developmentally disabled parents raising children are big, they are not insurmountable, said Kathryn Lincoln, adult coordinator at the Family Focus Resource Center.
"We break things down to make it easy for parents with developmental disabilities to deal with challenges they face," said Lincoln.
The seminar will feature a panel discussion by Lincoln, a parenting instructor and a parent with a developmental disability who is raising a 5-year-old child.
A parent information packet will be available to all who attend.
The seminar is free but reservations are required. For more information or to reserve a seat, call Lincoln at (818) 677-7063 or (818) 756-6225.
