CSUN Course Offers Women Lessons In Self-Defense

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 27, 2000) - Cal State Northridge Public Safety officers are offering women a course in self-defense next month at the university.

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) program, taught by women for women, will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on April 8, 15 and 22 in Room 122 of Sierra Hall on the west side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The cost is $10 for registered CSUN students, $20 for faculty, staff and non-students, and includes a 66-page manual.

Lt. John Smither, the RAD coordinator, said the course covers a wide range of subjects, from risk reduction and personal safety tips to techniques women can use if they are attacked. On the last day of the course, the students will be suited up in protective gear and run simulated scenarios in which they are attacked by male instructors also in protective gear, to test what they have learned.

The course is offered every month. However, there are no classes in May because of the university's commencement. The next course offering is scheduled for June.

To sign up or for more information about the course, call (818) 677-2764.

California State University, Northridge has more than 27,000 full- and part-time students and offers 48 bachelor's and 39 master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley.
