Panelists to Discuss How to Prevent School Violence

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 3, 2000) -- Prevention can be as powerful as a voice in the community. On Wednesday, May 10, both will come into play when a panel at Cal State Northridge addresses the issue of how to prevent school violence.

The evening discussion will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Whitsett Room located on the fourth floor of Sierra Hall.

The panelists will discuss research findings and experiences in dealing with violence at school and the effects they have on students, teachers and the community. In addition, the panelists will discuss strategies for decreasing school violence, the varieties and prevalence of this issue and the efforts being undertaken to decrease and prevent violence.

This panel discussion will serve as a forum for community members, parents, students and teachers to ask questions and raise concerns about school violence.

The panelists will include Leah Aldridge from Los Angeles Commission on Assault Against Women (LACAAW), Tony Barbone of the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles, Michelle Marsh from the Los Angeles Commission on Human Relations, Carlos Morales from the LACAAW Monroe High School Violence Prevention Program, Bernardo Rosas of Pomona Community Wellness, an LAUSD police officer and a LAUSD counselor.
