One-Stop Family Center to Open in Pacoima

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 16, 2000) - Enjoy a day of fun activities and entertainment for the whole family at the grand opening of the Pacoima Urban Village on Saturday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will take place at 12700 Van Nuys Blvd.

Students and faculty from the Department of Family Environmental Sciences (FES) at Cal State Northridge organized the event to celebrate the new location of the one-stop family center that originally was at the Vaughn Next Century Learning Center.

The Pacoima Urban Village grew out of the efforts of many families to improve the quality of the education their children were receiving at their local school, said Gerry Luethy, a FES professor and one of the organizers of the village.

Located in the Pierce Van Nuys Apartment Complex, the center provides adult education, social services, health care for the students' families and Learn through Play, a FES/Family Studies Option Saturday program. There also are plans for an interdisciplinary group of 10 teachers and students who will provide innovative, open-ended activities for children ages 2-12 and their parents.

The Urban Center will also host an Easter Family Fiesta for children, including an Easter egg hunt, on April 15.

For more information, call the Family Environmental Sciences Department at (818) 677-3051.
