More than 160 students are expected to join in the student-sponsored event, to be held at 3 p.m. in the University Club, corner of Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street. The informal celebration is separate from the university's official graduation ceremonies for students coming in the following week.
After starting out as a small dinner recognizing two or three students, the black students' event has become a much-anticipated annual celebration.
"This is something that the families and students really enjoy. It has become a tradition that is personal for the graduates as well as for their family and friends. We see them coming back to participate when they pursue their graduate degrees," said Margaret Brown, director of the College of Health and Human Developmentıs Student Services Center/EOP.
Cheryl Teal, a senior who plans to return to CSUN in the fall to pursue a master's degree in sociology, added, "It is an honor and tribute for those of us who are 'statistically' not supposed to graduate. This is special in that we are recognized for our individual accomplishments."
Syvetril Perryman, a journalism major, said, "It celebrates our heritage and allows people to see African Americans as successful and determined to reach our goals."
