Mandatory Workshop on How to Identify,
Treat Child Abuse Offered at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 20, 2000) - A mandatory workshop on how to identify, assess, intervene and treat child abuse will be offered to mental health professionals by Cal State Northridge's Centers in Educational Psychology on Sunday, April 2.

The session will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the university's Business Education Auditorium 101 on the west side of campus near Etiwanda Avenue and Plummer Street.

Marriage and family counselor Esther Gillies will discuss the historical perspective of the child abuse problem and society's response; define and describe the different types of abuse, the dynamics involved and the short and long term effects; effective intervention treatment; legal obligations for reporting child abuse, issues of confidentiality and privilege; and information on resources available to the community as well as educational and professional resources for those in the field.

Affordable fees and continuing education units are offered to marriage family child counselors, licensed clinical social workers and educators.

The workshops are designed to provide quality continuing education and training to licensed counselors, teachers, school psychologists, interns and other mental health professionals.
