CSUN's Oviatt Library Begins Wing Reconstruction
With Groundbreaking Ceremony

Cal State Northridge's Oviatt Library will celebrate the start of reconstruction of its east and west wings with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. All are invited to attend.

"The new wings will be great examples of state-of-the-art facilities that will serve our faculty and students," said Arthur Elbert, vice president of administration and finance.

With an estimated completion date of summer or fall 1999, the new wings will provide students a return to the 3,200 study seat capacity, including more graduate study rooms.

Other improvements include enhanced assisted learning rooms, library instruction labs and user work areas with power and ports for voice and data.

Groundbreaking events will take place under the shade trees near the southeast corner of the Oviatt lawn. Refreshments will be provided.

University President Blenda J. Wilson, Provost Louanne Kennedy, Vice President Arthur Elbert, Library Dean Susan Curzon and State Senator Cathie Wright will be among the dignitaries on hand.

The wings were destroyed as a result of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. While the core of the building reopened within months, the 6.7 tremor caused severe structural damage to the wings that will cost an estimated $16.7 million to rebuild.
