Tetreault will serve as dean while a search continues for a permanent successor to Ellner.
"We are fortunate to have someone with Dr. Tetreault's experience and qualifications to serve in this important position during this time of significant challenge and change for the preparation of teachers in the state of California," said Louanne Kennedy, CSUN's provost and vice president of academic affairs.
Tetreault will be on leave from California State University, Fullerton, where she has served as both dean of the School of Human Development and Community Service (encompassing teacher preparation) and vice president of academic affairs.
She led a university-wide project at Fullerton to refine the institution's mission and goals, and, in partnership with faculty governance, saw through revisions in the policies and procedures for evaluation of faculty and the reform of General Education. She has been active in collaborative projects with public schools and founded several professional development schools in local school districts.
Tetreault earned her bachelor's degree in history from Benedictine College and went on to earn graduate degrees in education and special education from the University of Chicago and Boston University. She completed post-graduate work in educational management from Harvard University in 1995.
Tetreault has published extensively in the area of diversity, feminist pedagogies and epistemologies, and curriculum reform. Her book, The Feminist Classroom, co-authored with Frances Maher, appeared in 1994.
