CSUN Student Engineers to Host Science Day for Youth
Hoping to spark an interest in science and math in young people, Cal State Northridge is hosting "Science Day" for more than 500 San Fernando Valley elementary school children on Thursday, Nov. 19.
The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the University Student Union on the east side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
There will be presentations and demonstrations on such subjects as chemistry, physics, astronomy and engineering, as well as hands-on workshops.
This year's speakers will include Nagin Cox of the Jet Propulsion Laboratories and Assemblyman Tony Cardenas.
The event is sponsored by CSUN's Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers will host a foil boat contest after a brief lecture on the structure of boats. The student group that constructs the boat that holds the most pennies before it sinks will win. The ogranization will also conduct a straw tower contest to see who can build the tallest tower with straw and tape. (Editor's Note: Photo Opportunity)
Students will have an opportunity to see and try on a real space suit at the NASA presentation. (Editor's Note: Photo opportunity)
A seismogragph will be brought in and students will have an opportunity to stomp their feet as hard as they can to see the level of magnitude on the Richter scale during a presentation by CSUN's Geology Department.
Lockheed Martin will show two videos highlighting the development of the company's aircraft including the X-33 flying vehicle.
Students will tour CSUN's Senior Design Labs in various departments of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and see a presentation of the Mechanical Engineering department's Formula 1 Car.
Litton Guidance and Control Systems will show a video of the company's design and applications of spacecraft engines.
Rocketdyne will show a video on Spacecraft engines. that will provide students with a basic knowledge of space exploration.
Chicanos for Community Medicine will conduct a workshop to introduce students to the health science field. Participants will be able to play with dough to simulate situations encountered in this area of science.
