Women's Basketball Coach Abraham Resigns

Michael J. Abraham, Cal State Northridge's women's basketball coach, resigned effective today in the wake of his recent arrest on federal drug charges.

Abraham, 39, of Northridge issued the following statement through his attorney:

"Effective Nov. 6, 1998, I am resigning from my position as the women's basketball coach at Cal State Northridge. I have made this painful decision out of respect for the university and the fine student athletes with whom I have had the privilege of being associated. My family and I are grateful for the support that has been offered to us during this very difficult time."

Abraham, who was about to start his fourth season at the university, had been relieved of his coaching duties and placed on administrative leave following his Oct. 27 arrest.

Abraham remains free on bond and his case is pending in federal court in Los Angeles. The coach had worked at CSUN since June 1995, most recently under a two-year contract that ends with his resignation.

The university on Wednesday named assistant coach Frozena Jerro as acting head coach of the women's team.
