"The Many Faces and Voices of Our Lady of Guadalupe" will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center of the University Student Union on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
"This event will explore the multiple meanings of a significant religious and cultural icon of Chicanos and Chicanas," said Lara Medina, a religious studies professor at Cal State Northridge and organizer of the symposium.
Medina said the free program will include presentations by Chicana indigenous women of Southern California, performance and visual artists.
The day's presenters include Linda Vallejo and Xochitlmilco Portillo, Chicana/Indigena ceremonial leaders; Lillian Robles, a Juaņeno elder and environmentalist; Mita Cuaron, a visual artist, Isabel Martinez, a visual artist; Raquel Salinas, a performance artist; and Rosa Martha Zarate, a songwriter and community organizer.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico and has served as an inspiration and icon for a variety of political movements in Mexico and the United States.
