The session, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., will be moderated by health sciences professor Shelia Harbet, who uses internet technology to teach some of her classes.
Wilson said she has two reasons for taking part in the chat room discussion - one was simply to learn how to use this new communications medium.
"But more importantly, this is a new and hopefully better way for me to communicate directly to more of our students and find out what their hopes and concerns are, not just for their futures but also for the university," Wilson said.
Several hundred students are expected to take part in the discussion. They will be able to enter the chat room from computer on campus as well as from their homes. Several students are already using the technology in their classes. Approximately 12 faculty are currently using the technology extensively as part of their course work
John Hartzog, director of the university's Learning Resource Center, is setting up the dialogue. He said the discussion is open to everyone, not just students.
"It's open to the world," he said. "Anyone who knows the time and address of the site can join."
He said all the necessary information on how to join the discussion can be found at http://www.vcsun.org/~john/preswilson.html.
