The center collects, analyzes and reports on economic, social and demographic data concerning the San Fernando Valley. It is housed in the College of Business Administration and Economics under the direction of economics professor Shirley Svorny.
"The college is proud to host the San Fernando Valley Economic Research Center," said William Hosek, dean of the college. "The center not only provides excellent academic opportunities for our faculty and students, it represents an important outreach tool by furnishing objective data about the economy of the San Fernando Valley."
A breakfast celebrating the center's creation will take place from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Sept. 9 at the University Club at the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street in Northridge.
At that time, Svorny and three local business leaders will present reports on the state of the Valley's economy.
Svorny will present an overall picture of the Valley, while Michael Klausman, president of CBS Studio Center; Robert Lumley, senior vice president of The Voit Companies; and Daniel F. Selleck, president of the Selleck Development Group, will report on the area's entertainment and real estate sectors.
"My hope is that the center becomes a resource for business people, people interested in public policy and for non-profit agencies that serve the San Fernando Valley," Svorny said. "There haven't been very many people who have tried to put together data on the Valley before, and this is something that we wanted to see done."
