Noted Journalist Explores Origins of 1992 LA Riots

Noted journalist Lou Cannon, a special correspondent for the Washington Post, will discuss the origins of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Cal State Northridge.

Cannon, who has recently published Official Negligence: How Rodney King and the Riots Changed Los Angeles and the LAPD, will speak at 2:30 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Cannon's appearance is part of the Department of History's Valley Pioneer Lecture Series.

Cannon, who was White House correspondent for the Washington Post, served as the Post's Los Angeles Bureau Chief in 1977 to 1980 and again from 1991 to 1993. He covered the 1991 Rodney King incident, the ensuing trials and the 1992 riots. He then spent the next five years interviewing the legal, political and police participants in preparation for his book.

"Cannon makes his mark where he always has: with command of detail and with thoughtful, analytical storytelling," noted Jim Newton of the Los Angeles Times. "And because Los Angeles is in many ways America's bellwether, Cannon's reflections on the city's recent past are powerful warnings to the contemplating the nation's future."
