CSUN Invites Public to Join 40th Anniversary Celebration

Cal State Northridge is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a variety of activities throughout the year, and invites the community to join university officials in marking the occasion.

The celebration will officially get under way with a series of events beginning Sept. 25 on "Founders' Weekend."

"Through a variety of activities, programs, lectures and presentations, it is our hope that the entire university community - emerti faculty, alumni, current faculty, staff, friends, and neighbors - will become more connected to and involved with the institution," said William Outhouse, vice president for university relations.

"We recognize that the collective sum of our forty years of personal and intellectual experiences should be shared with current and former students of our university," Outhouse said. "As we celebrate our remarkable history, we will highlight our vision of the future."

"Founders' Weekend" festivities begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, with a buffet reception celebrating the university's academic evolution. The deans and faculty in the university's eight colleges will discuss how curricula and instructional methods have developed since the university started in 1958.

The College of Arts, Media, and Communication will host their reception in the Music Building Courtyard at the southwest corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge. All other colleges will host their receptions in the Business and Education Courtyard, which is dedicated to former CSUN President James Cleary, on the west side of the campus.

From 7 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 25, there will be a cocktail reception on the Oviatt Library Portico in the center of the campus to kick off a special exhibit of the university's archives.

Alumni musicians Sandra Kipp, who plays flute, and Roger Wilkie, who plays violin, will perform a chamber music concert beginning at 8 p.m. on Sept. 25 in the Music Recital Hall Courtyard near the southwest corner of the campus.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, there will be a Founders' Day brunch at 11 a.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union honoring the CSUN's three presidents, Ralph Prator, James Cleary and Blenda Wilson. Retired faculty and former student leaders have been invited to attend. The brunch will cost $15 per person. Reservations are required, and space is limited

At 2 p.m. on Sept. 26, Wilson, the deans, alumni and friends will be taking part in a tailgate party prior to the start of the football game featuring the CSUN Matadors vs. the Eastern Washington Eagles. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Tickets to both the tailgate party and game are $15.

That evening, at 8 p.m. the university will launch its first annual Performing Arts Center Community Showcase featuring performances by local artists in the university's new 500-seat, state-of-the-art theatre. A "Meet the Artist" reception follows the performance. Attendance to performance and reception are by invitation only.

The public is invited to attend a free performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, in the Performing Arts Center on the east side of the campus.

For more information about the anniversary celebration or to make reservations for the brunch, call the Office of Alumni Relations at (818) 677-2137.
