Record Numbers Apply for CSUN Admission

A record number of high school and community college students took part in Instant Admissions Day at Cal State Northridge last week, and university officials estimate about 90 percent of them were eligible to become CSUN students next fall.

Approximately 1,800 students and their parents crowded the halls of the University Student Union Nov. 11, getting information about Northridge and finding out if they had a place at one of the Southland's top universities. About 1,600 received provisional admissions.

"We saw a lot of truly high achieving students with GPAs of 3.0 and above, and SAT scores well above 1000," said Ludim Seja de Manzano, director of outreach and recruitment. "It was a very impressive group of young people."

The university is aiming to enroll no more than 2,200 students as first-time freshman in Fall, 1999. The last day to turn in applications for first-time freshmen is Nov. 30.

In addition to Instant Admissions Day, university recruitment officials are bringing the admission's process to local communities. Recruitment officers spent the past week visiting the Crenshaw and Ventura areas, and they plan to visit East Los Angeles and Pasadena later this month.

"Once we've admitted these students, our next job is to make sure they attend next year," Seja de Manzano said.

In the coming months, she said, those students who have received provisional admission to the university will be invited to receptions and other events where they will have the opportunity to meet with CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson, college deans and faculty.

"I think once they consider the wonderful opportunities they will have to do research and have internships in their majors while undergraduates, and the individual attention and high level they get at the university, a lot of these students will be at CSUN next fall," Seja de Manzano said.
