Almost 40 trailers in what has been known as Zelzah Court on the east side of the campus are being split in half and hauled away on large transport trucks between now and the end of this year, said Maureen Shideh, CSUN's coordinator of academic space planning.
About half of the trailers are being dismantled this week. At least five more, equal to about 10 building floors, will be hauled away on Friday, Nov. 21, beginning at about 9:30 a.m.
After the quake, some 300 trailers were installed on the CSUN campus, mainly in parking lots, and the campus managed to open the Spring 1994 semester only a few days after the originally scheduled date.
Occupants of Zelzah Court, including the student newspaper, television classes and faculty offices, have moved back into the newly renovated Jerome Richfield and Kinesiology buildings. The Richfield building had been closed since the 1994 quake.
As of the fall semester, 76 of the 107 buildings damaged in the earthquake had been repaired. CSUN has received state and federal approvals for $286.2 million of what is projected to be a $328.7 million-project.
Zelzah Court is located on Zelzah Avenue north of Plummer Street on the Cal State Northridge campus, 18111 Nordhoff St.
