A panel discussion on ethnicity and gender in the media will feature actresses Lisa Lord, Hattie Winston and Liz Torres at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the CSUN Little Theatre. The topic of the presentation, moderated by Lillian Lehman of the theater department, is "Creativity, Casting and Critics--Women of Color Confront Industry Images."
Marcia Jarmel's documentary film, "The Return of Sarah's Daughter," about two secular women drawn to Jewish Orthodoxy, will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in the Santa Clarita Room of the University Student Union.
On Thursday, March 26, the CSUN Women's Studies Department will sponsor a video presentation and discussion, "Battle for the Minds: A Shocking Tale of Politics, Fundamentalism & Women," in the University Student Union's Pasadena Room. A discussion featuring Linda A. Moody, author of "Women Encounter God: Theology Across the Boundaries of Difference" and president of the American Academy of Religion/Western Region, will follow the film. Moody is a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary before the incursion of fundamentalism.
The Women's Studies Department also will sponsor a series of lunchtime speakers featuring faculty members. The schedule for the remaining speakers are as follows: Wednesday, March 11, noon, Marta Lopez-Garza, "Women as Community Activists;" Tuesday, March 24, 12:30 p.m., Nayereh Tohidi and Linda Fidell, "Women and Islam in the Contemporary Context," and Tuesday, March 31, 12:30 p.m., Norma Pratt, "The Concept of Girlhood in Southeast Asia." All will be held in room 344 of Jerome Richfield Hall.
In addition, the Oviatt Library will feature an exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the first U.S. women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, N.Y., March 9-31. The exhibition includes books, photographs and posters documenting women's suffrage.
Actress Carmen Zapata and Teatro Sin Fronteras CSUN theater group will appear in the third annual Reznik and Reznik Gender Equity Presentation from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in the Performing Arts Center.
"Women have historically been written out of history. Women's History Month is an attempt to write them back in," said Elizabeth Say, Women's Studies Department chair.
All events are free and open to the public.
