The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in the University Student Union Performing Arts Center on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
Among those joining Whitwell for the celebration are Ronald Johnson, who has recently conducted in Hungary, Switzerland, German, Israel, Spain and Hong Kong; Lawrence Harper, former conductor of the Concord Chamber Orchestra of Milwaukee, Wis., and founder of the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra; Toshiyuki Shimada, conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra; and Clark McAlister, conductor of the Deerfield Beach Symphony Orchestra in Florida.
Each guest conductor will lead the CSUN Wind Ensemble during the program. All the conductors studied under Whitwell.
The evening's performance will include the premiere of two new pieces, "JubilŠum!" by Whitwell and "Symphony, Nr. 2" by McAlister.
Following the concert, the audience is invited to a special reception for Whitwell in the USU Grand Salon.
Whitwell came to the university in 1969 as conductor of the CSUN Wind Ensemble. Through his efforts, the ensemble has gained international recognition. The group has hosted a National Wind Ensemble Conference, recorded for Voice of America, produced a 13-part TV series for the classroom and brought to campus such famous guest composer/conductors as Aaron Copeland, Karel Husa and Ernst Krenek.
The ensemble made international concert tours to Europe in 1981 and 1989, to Japan in 1984 and in 1989 they were awarded a gold medal at the International Music Contest in Kerkrade, The Netherlands.
Advanced tickets are $6.50 for general admission, $5 for faculty and staff, $3.50 for seniors and students.
