CSUN's Ventura Campus Celebrates
Commencement at CSU Channel Islands Site

More than 400 students will walk across the stage Friday, May 22, to receive their diplomas from Cal State Northridge's Ventura Campus. They will be the first class to graduate at the proposed CSU Channel Islands' site in Camarillo.

Joining in the celebration will be state Sen. Jack O'Connell, who will give the commencement address. O'Connell, a California State University alum, has played a key role in the creation of the CSU Channel Islands campus.

"We are pleased that this year's ceremony is taking place at the proposed site for the new Channel Islands campus," said Blenda J. Wilson, President of California State University, Northridge. "The students graduating from our Ventura campus have worked hard to earn their degrees and we are proud that they will be the ones to inaugurate what I am sure will be a great university."

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the future site of California State University Channel Islands, 1878 S. Lewis Rd in Camarillo.

In addition to the speech by Sen. O'Connell, more than 20% of this year s class will be recognized as completing their degrees with honors, earning GPA s of 3.5 to 4.0. Two students, Dolores M. Beahm of Ventura, and Kirsten I. Rasmussen of Camarillo, will receive the university's Liberal Studies Outstanding Student Award for their academic performance.

A reception to honor the graduates will be held immediately following the ceremony.

O'Connell was elected to the 35th Assembly District in 1982 and was reelected by wide margins in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1992. In 1988, he received both the Republican and Democratic nominations for his seat. In 1994, O'Connell was elected to the 18th State Senate District by substantial margin. The district is comprised of all of the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, as well as western Ventura County.

The Ventura Campus offers a broad range of course offering designed to accommodate the diverse needs of its students. Undergraduate degrees will be awarded in Business Administration (Accounting Theory & Practice, Human Resources Management and Organization Systems Management option), Child Development, English, Liberal Studies, Nursing, Psychology, and Sociology (Criminology & Corrections, Counseling, Interviewing, and General Sociology options).
