Celebrated mezzo-soprano Delores Ziegler will join Vaness in the benefit concert at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the university campus, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.
Vaness will perform selections from "Air Chantes" by Francis Poulenc and "Antony and Cleopatra" by Samuel Barber, as well as selections by John Kander. Ziegler will perform music by Richard Strauss and W.A. Mozart. Together, they will sing arias from Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte" and Vicenzo Bellini's "Norma."
Vaness, who has performed in major opera houses throughout the world, trained at Cal State Northridge in Scott's opera program from 1974 through 1979 when she joined the New York City Opera.
Scott will retire this semester after 35 years at CSUN. During his tenure, Scott is credited with developing many singers who have gone on to successful professional careers, including Vaness, Jessica Siena and Roger Patterson.
Vaness' peformance at CSUN will benefit the newly established David W. Scott Opera Fund. The acclaimed soprano is scheduled to appear with the L.A. Opera in "Il Trovatore" later this spring and "La Traviata" next season.
